Personal Preparedness

Citizens are expected to be aware of developing or occurring hazardous events and respond in a safe, responsible manner. Citizens are also encouraged to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours after a disaster.

Communities throughout the Pacific Northwest are subject to a number of natural, technological and human-caused disasters. While we cannot stop these disasters from occurring, we can limit their impact on us and those we care about.

Contrary to what you may think the chances of being killed or injured in a disaster are very low. However, it is likely your quality of life will be affected in some way. The phones may not work, the power might be out, you may have no heat, water systems may be broken or contaminated, the sewers systems may shutdown, your home might be damaged so badly that you can no longer live in it and the routes you use to get to work and the grocery store may be seriously damaged. These are all quality of life things that you can plan and prepare for with just a little effort.

To find out more about steps you can take to prepare, see the information below and visit the Disaster Preparation Handbook from the Washington Military Department. To find out detailed information about your community's disaster plans, call your local office of emergency management.

  • Emergency Telephone Numbers

Once your family is prepared, it is time to look to your neighbors. In times of disaster, your neighbors will probably be the first ones available to come to your aid. Find out before disaster strikes what resources you share and how you can work together for the good of one another.

Good Luck! And don't forget to review your plan annually.
