Emergency Preparedness for Businesses

Believe it or not, every day emergencies occur in the businesses throughout our area. This can be witnessed by simply watching your local news or reading the local newspaper. As a result every business should build a plan that defines how to deal with everything from a medical emergency to an event that requires building evacuation or shelter-in-place.

There are numerous resources available to you and your organization to assist in either strengthening you existing plan or in plan development. Here are just two sites you will find helpful in developing your emergency preparedness plan.

The
Ready.gov site – PLAN TO STAY IN BUSINESS addresses the fact that your employees and co-workers are your most important and valuable asset. It addresses communication, worker disabilities and the need to exercise the plan. In addition, it defines suggested basic supplies one should consider for emergency situations. This simple guide is perfect for small businesses.

The FEMA Guide provides step-by-step advice on how to create and maintain a detailed emergency management program. It is not industry specific -- It can be used by all industries.

The need for a viable Emergency Management Program is an element of the general accepted practices for business continuity management. The FEMA Guide will ensure you meet those expectations. This guide is more suitable for medium to large organizations.
