If you had a chance to pack up all the supplies you’d need for disaster preparedeness, what would you store, and how much would you store? And how would you acquire these things if you had to do it on your actual budget instead of an ideal budget?
EDITED TO ADD: Please note that I asked about how MUCH would you stock up? Thank you. :)

Take Action Today!

A lot of chocolate, cheese, tins of baked beans, tins of veg, tinned potatoes, long life milk, water. A tin opener would also be essential. Buy a lot of a few staple items is best in my opinion.
It is also amazing how people don’t realise that clean drinking water is the most essential thing!

Lots of news coverage yesterday on the third anniversary of Katrina hitting N’Awlins. Why don’t we mark the anniversary of every natural disaster that has befallen Americans. What about Hurricane Andrew? All of the California brush fires over the years? Floods in the Pacific Northwest? Can anyone explain this to me?

Nope its only cause a bunch of minorities were affected by this hurricane and politicians keep bringing it up over and over cause they are hoping to get more votes by trying to come across like they actually care about these people.

Also, if I ask and they currently dispense it, how will I know if that policy changes in the future? I wouldn’t want to be caught off guard.
I don’t currently need it but I just want to be responsible and make sure it’s available if I ever do.

Where I live, every pharmacy carries it, but most do require some "counselling" with the pharmacist before taking it, and I think in some places there are age restrictions on it.

Like someone else mentioned, the only thing to really do is call the pharmacies and ask. I needed Plan B once, and instead of waste my time searching around, I called the nearest pharmacy to ask if they had it and they certainly did.

So if there ever comes the time you need it, you can bet that almost any legit pharmacy will be carrying it, but it’s best to call them before you stop by so you don’t waste time driving around town to different ones. You will have time to call and ask, don’t worry, you have 72 hours after sex to take the pills.

He mumbled and stumbled and sounded like the true idiot he is proving to be. His inexperience is now coming clear in international affairs, and he is demeaning the USA in a sorry display of ineptitude that makes Bush look like Churchill! When will you fools who support this presidential disaster finally see what a fool this man really is?

I would rather hear Obama take his time, and carefully choose his words and how he frames things, than what that mush head Bush did. He would just come out with the most random dribble, all while murdering the English language.

Most cities don’t have a disaster preparedness plan specifically for a volcano. However, I could promise you if Yellowstone erupted every city in the continetal United States will wish they did as it is the largest active volcano in the world rated as a VEI8 supervolcano. Instead (not joking) we will have to rely on FEMA, and they couldn’t do a descent job for what was a much smaller disaster area than what Yellowstone would be.

I am a recent college grad looking to get into disaster relief work. I am looking for a job with FEMA, Red Cross, etc. The problem is they don’t really seem to have to many entry level type of positions. Any ideas on who to talk to, or where to go to get more experience for these types of jobs?

To get experience that will make you attractive for relief work, get all the disaster training you can from the American Red Cross and join them as a volunteer. You could also look into volunteering at your local fire station and getting training for that as well. This kind of volunteering will not only get you training and experience, it will also get you in contact with people who are professionals, and that can often lead to paid work.

You might consider learning a second language as well — this will make you particularly attractive to organizations like FEMA. Spanish is an obvious choice, but just about anything would be of value.
