Do you feel a need to prepare yourself for any kind of disaster that could strike without notice?

I have a week’s worth of food and water, and a shorter-term go bag.

I am a Red Cross disaster response volunteer, and the two things I consistently find that people don’t plan for are proof of address and renter’s insurance for apartments.

If you don’t have proof that you live at an address affected by a fire, flood, or other type of local disaster, the Red Cross cannot provide financial assistance (thank the Katrina scammers for that). You can get water, food, clothing, and shelter, but not money aid.

Take Action Today!

People who rent apartments think (wrongly) that their landlord’s insurance will cover any type of loss–WRONG. Get your own. In NYC it’s about $20 a month for a good-sized apartment.

I am trying to put a report together for the percentage of people affected directly by natural disasters; meaning you or someone close to you was in the disaster.

Was an organization like the red cross or national guard there? Were they helpful?

Yes, when I was a child living in Kansas. We lived there only for 1 1/2 years and went through some horrific tornadoes.

When I was 3 years old we lived in Tennessee and were flooded.

When we moved to Washington, DC we moved just in time for Hurricane Agnes, where our temporary housing was filled with 3 feet of water.

The Red Cross was not at any of these disasters.

The EAP does not just consist of 6 steps. It depends on where you are working and what your job title is. Most consist of recognizing the emergency, treating the victim, calling 911 and then transfering care to paramedics.

I.e. there is a disaster in Haiti. Do doctors actually go down there and dig for bodies from the rubble, stabilizing their condition, etc..? Is it doctors that do that? Recently I read that doctors mainly stay in the field hospital and never really leave due to safety concerns. Is this true? Can a doctor request to go out and actually provide emergency care in the FIELD not the field hospital?

I’m trying to choose a career, and participate in disaster response, but I don’t want to just sit at the field hospital and provide care (I can do that for part of the time though) If someone can clear that up for me, I’d be glad. Thanks.

doctors don’t dig in the rubble. paramedics specialise in extracting and transporting patients. a doctor may augment the care given en route.

paramedics work with emergency workers, firemen or the military to get ppl out of the rubble. paramedics and nurses transport to centralised field hospitals keeping them mostly alive on the way. doctors then fix them up enough so that they survive to get specialised treatment. emergency aid provided includes vaccinations to prevent the spread of disease. the MSF website will have more details as to what care is being provided in haiti.

This is what I am stuck on, I need to know how to respond to disasters such as:

Fire
Flood
Technology Failure
Power outage
Theft

Who would be notified first in each of those? and what would the proper course of action be? If it helps any I am developing this for a doctor’s office

Thanks in advance

Well, I don;t know about protecting the people. But one thing people often overlook is that if the doctors office experienced a disaster like the ones you described, it would also be necessary to have all his computer information. Think of an external drive.

Would you have implement an emergency evacuation of the city forcing people from their homes.

You would have to request National Guard assistance from the state governor.

Normally a city would first request assistance from neighboring communities under ‘mutual aid’ then request assistance from the state’s Office Of Emergency Services (or whatever they are called in your state).

And remember that you are not going to get an instant response from the National Guard. Those National Guardsmen are going to be at their civilian jobs at the time so it will take at least 12 hours for them to make it to their armories, pull out the equipment they need and then make the movement to your location
